When Harvey Milk challenged Gilbert Baker, an openly gay man, and a drag queen, to design the first symbol of pride in 1978, a flag was the perfect choice. Baker and other activists felt their job as gay people was to come out, to be visible, and to live in the truth. Baker believed that the rainbow flag was the best way to proclaim visibility and shout “this is who I am!” There are many iterations of the rainbow flag, representing the diversity and inclusion of the queer community. Wearing rainbows has become an enduring part of Pride events in June, but the pride fashion shouldn’t stop there.
